Frequently Asked Marine Solar Questions

What’s the efficiency of Open Waters Solar panels?

Open Waters Solar uses Maxeon Gen III solar cells with a rated efficiency of 24%. Their proprietary composite encapsulation results in a final cell efficiency of 23.3%. On a full module basis — accounting for borders and spacing — panel efficiency is on average 21.4%, or 214W per square metre at peak. This is among the highest true panel efficiencies in the industry. Most competitors only report cell-level efficiency, not total panel output.

Solar generates electricity from visible light, not just direct sun. On cloudy days, performance typically ranges from 20% to 60% of peak output depending on cloud density. In fact, cooler weather can increase electrical efficiency.

The Maxeon Gen III solar cells degrade at just 0.2% per year. The panel structure, made from marine-grade composites, is highly durable — similar in construction to a composite boat hull. Under normal use, panels are expected to last decades. If needed, they can be repaired and refinished just like other composite materials.

No. Open Waters panels are installed using 3M 4200 marine adhesive, a proven structural bond for marine environments. For structural installations, panels can also be embedded directly into surfaces.

Custom panels are designed for daisy-chained installation. Arrays connect to MPPT charge controllers and batteries. Due to enhanced bypass diode design, Open Waters recommends wiring panels in series to boost system efficiency.

The matte marine-grade coating is self-cleaning. Rainfall generally handles salt and debris buildup. No regular scrubbing is required, even in ocean conditions.

Formal salt accumulation tests are ongoing. However, based on existing performance data and the coating used, rain and surface runoff are typically enough to maintain efficiency.

Despite their dark colour, Open Waters panels shed heat well. Maxeon cells have a low power loss coefficient (-0.29% per °C), and the composite structure has low thermal mass. Wind, vessel motion, and flush-mounting help cool the panels naturally.

Under sunny conditions, output is approximately 5x the rated panel wattage per day. A 100W panel will typically generate around 500Wh/day. In mixed weather, 200–300Wh/day is common.

Pricing varies based on system size, layout, energy needs, and installation type. Let’s start a discussion, happy to provide an estimate.
