Lithium vs AGM: Which Battery Is Right for Me?

Lithium (LiFePO4) gives roughly twice the usable capacity per rated amp-hour, charges faster, weighs about half as much and lasts 3,000+ cycles — but it costs more up front and needs lithium-compatible charging. AGM costs less and tolerates cold charging better.

For most RV, van and marine house banks we recommend lithium, and we will tell you honestly when AGM is the better fit.

How much usable capacity does each really give?

This is the comparison that matters, and it is not the number on the label. LiFePO4 comfortably uses about 80% of rated capacity; AGM is typically kept to about 50% to protect battery life. So a 100Ah lithium battery delivers roughly what a 160Ah AGM bank does — before you account for weight or cycle life.

Will lithium work with my existing charger?

Not always, and this is the single most common upgrade mistake we fix. An existing converter, shore charger or solar controller may need a settings change or replacement to charge lithium correctly, and a stock alternator should never charge lithium directly — because lithium accepts charge so quickly, an unregulated alternator can run at maximum output until it overheats. The safe paths are a DC-DC charger that limits the draw, or an externally regulated alternator managed by a smart regulator.

When is AGM the better choice?

  • Cold sites without heated battery storage — AGM tolerates cold charging better, which is why our cabin starter kit uses an AGM battery.
  • Light or seasonal use — if the bank cycles rarely, lithium’s cycle-life advantage never gets spent.
  • Budget-led backup — when the job is occasional backup rather than daily living, the cheaper chemistry can be the honest answer.

Frequently asked questions

Rated at 3,000+ cycles, LiFePO4 outlasts AGM by a wide margin in daily-cycling use. In light seasonal use the difference matters far less, which is why we size the recommendation to how you actually use the boat, van or cabin.

Not in the same bank. Different chemistries need different charge profiles, and paralleling them means one is always being charged wrongly. A separate starter battery of a different chemistry is normal and fine.

Battery management plus correctly sized protection: a BMS appropriate to the bank, a disconnect such as a BatteryProtect, and properly rated fusing and busbars. Every APS lithium kit ships with these matched to the bank rather than left to the installer.
