Off-Grid Cabin & Backup Power: Solar, Batteries & Expert Support

A complete off-grid cabin system has four parts working together: a battery bank sized to the loads you must keep running, solar charging through an MPPT controller, power conversion for your AC loads, and correctly sized protection and fusing.

Access Power Solutions builds these as matched kits at three levels, from a small cabin or shed up to a remote property where backup power is not optional.

Who is this for?

  • Small cabins, sheds and remote buildings — lighting, device charging, a pump, and a modest AC load or two, for part of the year.
  • Regular off-grid use — the building is lived in for stretches at a time, so the system has to carry real daily loads through ordinary weather.
  • Remote property and critical backup — power that has to be there when nobody is watching: freezers, well pumps, comms, monitoring.

What does a complete cabin power system include?

Storage (an AGM bank at starter level, lithium as capacity grows), solar charging through a Victron SmartSolar MPPT controller, power conversion sized to the AC loads — a Phoenix inverter for a small cabin, a MultiPlus or Quattro inverter/charger where a generator or shore supply also has to be managed — and protection: fuses, busbars, cables and disconnects rated for the bank.

Component selection follows the current APS kit sheet (engineering revision v0.2, approved by APS engineering). Solar panel models are placeholders while the new solar vendor is confirmed. Load sizing, inverter capacity and final electrical protection are confirmed at system review.

Why does the starter kit use AGM rather than lithium?

Because a cold building is the one place AGM still wins. Lithium gives roughly twice the usable capacity per rated amp-hour and lasts far longer in daily cycling, but it has to be above freezing to charge. An unheated cabin in winter is exactly the case where AGM’s tolerance of cold charging matters more than its weight or cycle life. As capacity and daily use grow, the mid and advanced levels move to lithium at 24V and 48V, where thinner cables and lower losses start to pay for themselves.

How do you size a cabin system?

From the loads you must keep running, not from a product page. Add up the watt-hours of the things that cannot go dark — fridge or freezer, lighting, comms, pumps — then decide how many days without sun the system has to cover, and how it recharges when that runs out.

Batteries are silent, instant, and maintenance-free for daily cycling and overnight power; a generator is cheap bulk power for extended cloudy stretches or heavy loads. Most cabin systems we design are solar + battery with a generator as backup, sized so the generator rarely runs.

A 5kWh lithium bank runs a typical 12V fridge, LED lighting, and device charging for roughly 2–3 days without sun. We size backup systems to your actual loads, not averages.

Yes — if the backbone is sized for it. We design systems so you can add panels or battery capacity later without replacing the core. Tell us your 2–3 year plan and we will spec the inverter, controller, and wiring so expansion is plug-in, not rip-out.

Yes. We offer off-grid remote system monitoring — battery state, solar production and faults from your phone, even for remote sites. Ask us about adding monitoring to any kit.
